How to make a post without the new block editor.

I have been seeing that other Bloggers do not like using the new WP Block Editor any more than I do. This is the way I have been getting around it. It is very basic as you will see from the picture but it is very easy to use.

When you are on your “My Site” page look at the tabs down the left side. You will see the WP Admin page. I have highlighted it in this picture for you :)
Click the “WP Admin” tab and it will take you to this page

If you look down the left side of this page you will see the “Posts” tab. Click that and it will bring you to this page


You will now see it opens up a page that has all of your posts. Posted, scheduled, drafts, etc. Above these is an “Add New” which you can click to start a new post. Also if you look back at the left of the page you will see that it has opened up a new group of tabs under the “Posts” tab. One of which is the “Add New” tab. Clicking either”Add New” tab  will open this page.

As you can see it is very similar to the classic editor. To the right you will see your publish options, format. Scrolling down will show you the categories, and tags.
If you look at the “tags” you have a box to add, and if you start typing a tag it will drop a box to give you options of tags. It also has a “Choose from the most used tags” If you click that it will give you a list of the tags you have used in the past and you can simply click the tag and it will add it to this post.

If you are going to publish your post right away obviously you click the “Publish” tab and it will publish immediately. If you want to schedule it to publish later you will see “edit” beside the “publish immediately” option. When you click “edit” this is what you will see.

You simply click the month you want. The rest of the changes, the day, year, and time you click each box and change by typing the day, year and time. Also mine only works in military time. I don’t know how to change this so if you are publishing anytime after noon you will need to adjust that accordingly. Also you will see under the date and time  there are “OK” and “cancel” tabs.  When you type in your time and date, you hit “OK”. It will change the “Publish” tab to “schedule” *Note: if you do not hit the “OK” tab it will not save your desired schedule date, and it will publish immediately.

  1. Wow. Thanks, Margaret! I really don’t like the block editor either. It depresses me to be so disconnected from my WP family over being forced into something I am uncomfortable with. Since being forced into my new Smart phone this year, the FB changes, and now this block editor, I feel more defeated they ever.

    1. We are not alone about this block thing my friend. I saw a few people who were going to give up. Me included :) Then in one morning I saw 2 bloggers who were having issues, and one said they were just going to stop after 7 years because it was too much. So, if it helps keep them blogging I am happy to share. I was happy to read your air is getting a little better, and thanking God. I bring your name before our LORD every day, and am so thankful He hears and answers our prayers :)

        Sadly, the air quality here is still unhealthy (it is 188 now. We had about a brief respite last week but the air is now worse than it was before! 😷

    1. haha yes and for those of us(and by that I mean me lol) it is down right confusing and time consuming :) You are welcome for the post I hope it helps you. I am doing fine. You know same as every one else I guess, wear a mask, stay away from people if I have to go out, don’t go out unless necessary. Of course, if I am honest with the exception of wearing the mask, I tried to do all those things before this virus hit :) How are you doing Perna?

      1. I am so sorry what I posted didn’t help you. I did not like the “tag” process because I had to remember every tag. I use the same 12 tags EVETY post, so you would think I could remember them. Not really I was so use to just clicking on them in the drop down box. The way I posted about allows me to do a drop down box and all my tags are there. Again I am so sorry it didn’t work for you :( I pray they get it worked out for you :) I value your post :)

      2. That’s ok Margaret. I did have a chat with WordPress and I now know where to find my tags and after a little playing around with the program I also found out how to insert my pictures….now I just have to remember for the next time. I have decided to keep my post going so I’ll be still around even if I may not post as much I will always try to have a post for Thursdays.

    I could not get the hang of it when attempting the New Block Editor; and when prompted a couple weeks ago as it became the WordPress standard I did click the button to load the old Editor. I proceeded to finish a post previously started and everything went okay, except in initiating a new post, which used the New Editor. Following instructions on WordPress to switch back was clear reading only to find out I needed to upgrade to a business site to be able to use the plug-in. It seemed to take something away, that was free that suited my needs, to having to purchase it because of a forced upgrade. Enough said: This work-around seems to establish use of the Older Editor..

  3. I use the WordPress app for most have my post, and even though I have the classic version is an option, I still use the block editor. It wasn’t a problem to figure out the best way to use! A nice share for those who are having difficulty with the new format, and wonderful that you felt the need to share! God bless!

  5. This is what I have always done until you got down to the “tags.” I’ve not done that and my question is; I always have my blog addresses that I add at the end of my posts. Is this considered a tag and instead of having to type each address each time do I just click on tag and that adds them automatically?

    1. Hey Sue, the tags are like categories. It is how people find your post based on topics. It also how the search engines will categorize you in their engines. For instance I use Bible, God, Jesus, Bible verses, etc. These are all ways that WP and search engines put me in their searches so people can find me. When a person searches for lets say God it will put throw my blog in the search results. The website address are signatures(I think that is what they are called) I am pretty sure there is a way to have them added to your post each time without you having to type them in individually but I don’t know how. I will click around though and see if I can figure it out. In the meantime maybe someone reading this will know and help us out :)

      1. Oh Sue then I am in good company because I get lost every time they change anything. I don’t feel I helped too much with your specific question. Pretty much the feedback I got is type the links in each time, or have them typed somewhere that you can copy and paste them. I still can’t believe that WP can make that extremely complicated block thingy and yet doesn’t have a “signature” that can be added to each post. But what do I know :)

Sue I have been searching but I can’t find anything that will add your links to the bottom of the post either without you typing or copying and pasting each one or clicking the “link” tab and typing or copying and pasting each one in. This “link” tab that is in the bar that has the tabs for italics, bold, indentations etc. There was some really complicated(for me) way to add them to the “links” tab that is located on the left side on the WP admin page. There are already links to all kinds of sites in there. Mostly WP info or support etc type pages. But you can add links to it, and there was this long process(for me) to add a link. Even then you would still have to go through several clicks to be able to add them to the bottom of your post. You would think that WP would have a way to add links to the bottom of a post, kind of like the “signature” feature that most emails, and text offer. If it is, I can’t find it. If anyone shares how to do it I will send you a comment :)

    1. I am so happy you found it helpful Linda :) Hopefully it will help others who are frustrated with the new thingy. I didn’t cover everything because well once you get in there it is easy to see how to post pictures, links, etc since it has all the same that we are use to using :) Thank you for the reblog too and all your encouragement :)

    1. So happy it is helpful. I wasn’t able to cover everything but it is close enough to what we are use to that once you get in there you will be able to find all the things you are use to. Adding pictures, link etc are all the same. I know that is one of the issues people are having with the block thing. I didn’t cover them but you can see the same little icons that were used in the classic one so I figured it was self explanatory :) YAAAA I am hopeful that now we will still be seeing you posting for a long time to come :)

  6. I have been doing all of the things you mentioned since I started my new blog in February. I blundered through it until I figured it out. I think you explained it very well for those who are having trouble. Good job Margaret.

I realized after I started the post that there are so many more options to making a post but it is close enough to the classic that if people can get there, and do the basics they will be able to find all the things they use :) It’s not exactly the same as what we were use to BUT it is close :) Thank you for the encouragement Peggy :) You are always so kind.

        And I’m one of those people who can’t stand the new “block” editor.
        It’s nothing but confusion to me.

        I can’t say for sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it exists as a money maker for WordPress. (Giving you another way to purchase “premium” content of some kind).
